The Coffee Center at the 91��Ƭ, Davis, officially opened Friday, May 3. The Coffee Center is a center of excellence in the 91��Ƭ Davis College of Engineering and the first academic research and teaching facility in the U.S. entirely dedicated to the study of coffee.

The 91��Ƭ Davis Coffee Center hopes to change that, and is “the first multidisciplinary university research center to address the challenges and needs of the coffee industry through a holistic approach to coffee science and education,” according to its website. A dozen 91��Ƭ Davis Health employees including physicians, nurses and administrators swapped scrubs and slacks for jeans and hard hats last Friday, May 24. The group volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity construction site on 43rd Avenue in south Sacramento as part of the Women Build campaign. This annual event relies on more than 400 regional volunteers whose employers sponsor a build day.

Those are the findings of new research on the effects of caffeine on group performance from the Graduate School of Management at the 91��Ƭ, Davis.

Decades of coffee research have explored its effects on the individual, but this study is the first on the effects on performance in group tasks.

Wilbur Curtis Co. Supports 91��Ƭ Davis Coffee Center

Wilbur Curtis Co., an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of coffee-brewing equipment, has pledged $250,000 to the 91��Ƭ, Davis, to support the university’s expanding Coffee Center. The donation is the first by Wilbur Curtis to a major academic institution.

The pioneering center and pilot roastery will be devoted to post-harvest coffee research and engineering, an underrepresented field, and aims to be the leader in coffee science.
