UPDATED: Longer Detour Around Ramp Work at Hutchison and 113

Updated 7 p.m. March 24: The new cycle track will not open, as previously announced, when construction switches from the north to the south side of the Hutchison Drive overpass. Instead, bike lanes going each direction will be provided for continued bicycle travel across the overpass. In addition, the switch to the south side is now scheduled for the week of March 28. The story below has been revised to reflect these changes.

91��Ƭ Davis, recently ranked number one most sustainable university in the nation and fifth in the world (UI GreenMetric), seeks to further strengthen its recognition as a leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship, by proposing a plan to end fossil fuel use in its operations.

New Sidewalks and Bike Lanes Coming to West Village-Campus Corridor

91��Ƭ Davis is building comfort, convenience and sustainability into the Hutchison Drive commute path between 91��Ƭ Davis West Village and the central campus.

The project centered on the Hutchison overpass at Highway 113 calls for new sidewalks, a bike path running east on the south side of Hutchison and a 14-foot-wide two-way cycle track on the north side of Hutchison. What is a cycle track? See box below.

The Electrification of AS91��ƬD Unitrans

AS91��ƬD Unitrans recently received a federal grant to buy five more battery electric buses, which means the campus-city transit system now has funding for 11 of the buses — three shy of the first major milestone on the way to electrifying the fleet and achieving greater sustainability.

The $3.76 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration will cover 80 percent of the cost of five buses; student fees will pay the remainder.

Sustainability Efforts Land 91��Ƭ Davis on ‘Cool Schools’ List

Ranked 18th, 91��Ƭ Davis earned high marks for sustainability research, landscape management, water conservation, use of renewable energy and more.

In the 10th annual GreenMetric rankings that came out earlier this month, 91��Ƭ Davis is acknowledged for the third year in a row as the No. 1 “most sustainable” university in the United States and No. 3 globally.
