91��Ƭ Davis Tops Nation in Sustainability Rankings

The 91��Ƭ, Davis, is the “greenest” campus in the United States for the ninth year in a row, according to the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings published today (Dec. 12).

The rankings, established by the University of Indonesia in 2010, also place 91��Ƭ Davis as the world’s seventh most sustainable university, the 12th consecutive year the campus has been in the world’s top 10.

Funding and Pathway Plan Are Steps Toward Reducing Fossil Fuel Use

91��Ƭ Davis is making progress on its move away from fossil fuels, primarily through a multi-year project on the Davis campus to switch the central district energy plant from natural gas to electricity. Last month, Chancellor Gary S. May and the Chancellor’s Committee for Campus Planning and Design endorsed moving forward with a $55.5 million investment of campus funds for the project’s next phase. This is on top of the $56 million invested for the project’s first phase.

Big Shift Toward Carbon-Neutral Future

The 91��Ƭ Davis Big Shift hot water conversion project will shift the energy source we use to heat many of our buildings from natural gas (using steam) to electricity (using hot water), reducing the university’s reliance on fossil fuels while immediately decreasing energy and water use — significant steps toward meeting the goal set by the 91��Ƭ Board of Regents for each campus to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.
