91��Ƭ Davis student Natasha Bibbs of Sacramento has already gone places with academic research — and she hopes to go even further.

The fourth-year student travelled about 2,000 miles to Louisiana and more than 150 years back in time to discover how someone she believes is an ancestor — perhaps her great-great-grandfather — became one of the first Black doctors in his community and used his status to contribute to the African American community.

One of the books in the “Magic Tree House” series for children takes a brother and sister to the Egyptian pyramids.

Brooke Morey of Redwood City, California, was 8 when she joined the characters on that adventure and read the book’s nonfiction companion about the pyramids and mummies. “I was just hooked.”

Then and there she resolved to become an Egyptologist. “Every decision I’ve made in regard to my academic career has been with that in mind.”

Students Build, Install Dark Matter Detector at CERN

The device, a demonstration prototype for an experiment called FORMOSA, is currently installed in the forward region of the ATLAS detector, part of the Large Hadron Collider.

How do teeny-tiny organisms influence the rest of life on Earth? This is the question on the mind of Daniel Oberbuer, a senior microbiology major working in Professor Jonathan Eisen’s lab in the Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility at 91��Ƭ Davis.

“I’m currently working on a study that aims to characterize the microbiome of hummingbirds in an attempt to determine whether or not they have resident gut microbes,” said Oberbuer.
